This is so beautiful and relatable. Thank you for sharing.

During the warmer months I am so busy. I over schedule myself and get what I call "sun-guilt" if I'm not outside enjoying the more "desirable" weather. But it's exhausting, and things pile up at home, we eat more fast food because sometimes we've been out ALL day and it's too late to cook or I'm just completely drained. And then winter comes around and things naturally slow down. Especially this year. Truthfully, I've really been enjoying the slowness of the last month, but I can't stop the little voice inside my head from calling me lazy. So I'm making it a point to make sure I'm focusing on the little things that make me happy. Cuddling on the couch with my five year old, cooking and baking more, catching up on things that usually get tossed aside when I'm go-go-go in the warmer months.

I appreciated your post and love your perspective. Happy Wintering.

Yes! We do a LOT of charcuterie board vibes as meals in the summer because we’re just gone or outside until dinner without realizing the time so I feel ya there. And yes, it’s hard to remember our purpose isn’t to always be rushing around!

I’m so sorry for your loss, especially in the midst of renovation chaos.

I listened to “Wintering” by Katherine May several years ago. I loved it and talked about it so much that my husband read it too, and still quotes it to this day. All three of her books are very good.

I love what you said about recurring moments. It’s so easy to not notice them because we’re so used to them, but they are the moments I want to capture. This has not been a recurring moment, but one I want to remember is this morning my youngest told me he was so tired last night he slept like a bird 😂

I swear. Someone needs to make a book where moms submit paragraphs of funny stuff their kids say. Lord knows we all could have journals FULL of paragraphs.

Love this. This idea of wintering is exactly why I loved that my kids had multiple snow days last week. School really gets in the way of us all being lazy. ❤️

Yes! I am so thankful I only have one in half day! I’m seriously considering keeping her half day in K5 next year (something people often don’t know is a legal option for public full day programs) just so we can have just one more year together.

I am just nodding along to all of this. As someone who generally LOATHES that period between mid-January and the end of march, something has been different this year and so much of it has been exactly what you’re talking about. A deliberate lack of hurry, no pressure to soak up every ounce of sunshine or do all the fun outdoor things like there is in the summer. We’re watching more tv and reading more books and bath time is longer (and splashier) and the Dutch Oven is busier and the freezer is full of leftover soup. As much as I love the warmer weather, winter seems to be growing on me.

You're in a similar life season as I am, yes? Similar age kids? It's so interesting to me how our lives seem to be guided in such unique directions depending on our season of motherhood. Like most of our kids finally play solo and we can appreciate a bit of the slow of winter that maybe we (perhaps subconsciously) remember from our own childhoods.

Love the prompt and the poem and that last photo 😍 love that you do birdwatching! We moved 6 months ago and there's a lot less birds here so I miss our backyard birds!

And I always want to write stuff down or take a photo but then forget. My husband always reminds me that I have a brain for memories and eyes to take pictures and that it's okay to miss some of those moments with my camera. But to stop sometimes and just capture in words or photos is a lovely thing to do and often helps me to feel such gratitude for what God has blessed me with!

Yes absolutely!! There is never a camera or words good enough for the real thing, but we can try to capture a reminder for our brain on occasion ❤️

Bummer on the birds! I’d be devastated! I remember when we were in an apartment, my now husband bought me a window cling bird feeder for our tiny little bedroom window! At least we got house finches and sparrows ha!

That's such a good idea - I should get a feeder... Or at least keep our bird baths filled up 😂. We also want to work on our garden and add in native plants so that we attract more birds - that'll definitely help! Just takes time 😅

Well, this is glorious and beautiful. I loved every bit of it. I want to come do January in your home with you. And yes, I have read "Wintering" and I love it and I highly recommend it. And your poem! Ah. Time to go write down my own small moment. Thanks for the inspiration.
